If you're using a UNIX-like operating system, then the telnet client is probably already installed. Just open a terminal application and try typing "telnet" at the command prompt.

• Max OS X:
  • Open Terminal.app and type "telnet"

• Ubuntu:
  • Install telnet with apt
  • $ apt-get install telnet

• CentOS/RedHat/Fedora:
  • Install telnet with yum
  • $ yum install telnet

• Other unix like variants:
  • See your package manager for details
